Tioga Pass     2 Day

The Dana Couloir and Ellery Bowl provide some serious steep skiing in a classic sierra environment. False White Mountain is a bit more relaxed, but truly beautiful. This combo trip is done from a comfortable car camp at lower altitudes and provides a great weekend of ski mountaineering.

Starting Point:
For Dana/Ellery Bowl we begin near Tioga Pass (9,945') at the west end of Tioga Lake.

The Route:
We follow the benches and slopes up Glacier Canyon to Dana Lake (11,100'). From here, we climb the Dana Couloir to its top about 12,300'. The descent of the couloir is classic 40° steep skiing and has a big, no fall feel. From the glacier, we contour around then climb the opposite wall of the canyon to Dana Plateau (11,582') to the top of Ellery Bowl to the broad-sloped cornice run down to Ellery Lake and a spotted vehicle.

For False White Mountain Peak (12,802'), our preferred route bgins from Tioga Pass to Gaylor Peak, then along the crest to False White Mountain Peak. We choose between several descent options depending on the snow conditions, often to a spotted vehicle along the Tioga Pass Road.

-Routes may vary-
